The 'good and Bad' airport list for summer travel
Despite relatively minimal delays reported across the country this past Memorial Day, consumers who traveled at the onset of summer help pinpoint some potential trouble spots and words of advice for July 4 and other summer travelers. With fewer TSA employees on site and new security procedures in place, most airports handled holiday crowds smoothly, while others are still working out the minor kinks, according to a travel agencie's post-Memorial Day poll. While some airports had minor waits, such as Sacramento, travelers in cities like Atlanta may need to prepare for lengthier wait times.

The majority of travelers reported that airports tended to be the busiest with more delays on the return flight home. Most respondents (88 percent) also recommended arriving at the airport 60 minutes or less prior to departure based upon their Memorial Day experiences (despite many airports' suggestions to arrive earlier). This nationwide airport survey, conducted in June 2004, polled consumers who traveled during the Memorial Day weekend (May 27 - 31, 2004) and complete results can be found at: Click Here to continue.

Northwest Airlines and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines recently announced new jet service to four new markets, including service between Lansing, Michigan, and Washington Dulles; Memphis and Richmond, Virginia; Detroit and Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport serving Fayetteville and Bentonville, Arkansas; and Detroit and Rochester, Minnesota. The new flights will be operated using Canadair Regional Jet (CRJ) aircraft operated by Northwest Airlink partner Pinnacle Airlines.

The 44-50 seat CRJ features a spacious cabin with comfortable two-by-two leather seating and other cabin amenities similar to larger jets, such as overhead bins, a galley, lavatory, and an efficient climate control system for customer comfort. Click Here to continue.

Northwest and KLM Announce a Revised Start Date for Atlanta-Amsterdam Service
Northwest Airlines and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will resume daily roundtrip service between Atlanta, Ga., and Amsterdam beginning on September 15, 2004, a month and a half earlier than originally scheduled. The route will be served using KLM 767-300ER aircraft that seat 30 customers in World Business Class and 190 customers in Coach Class.

KLM Flight 622 (NW 8622) will depart daily from Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport at 5:25 p.m., arriving at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport at 8:05 a.m. the next day. KLM Flight 621 (NW 8621) will depart Amsterdam daily at 10:35 a.m., arriving in Atlanta at 2:40 p.m. the same day.

Northwest/KLM suspended service on the Atlanta route shortly after September 11, 2001, responding to a sharp decline in traffic. Due to increased demand, the route has become viable once more.

AMERICAN AIRLINES Changes baggage weight limit
Effective June 1, AA implemented a new maximum weight for all bags checked to/through/from any destination in Europe or Asia. The new maximum weight limit is 70lbs/32kgs. There will be no option to pay for overweight baggage. Traveler will be required to reduce/redistribute the weight or not travel.

Continental Latest To Implement Pricing Adjustments
Continental Airlines lowered one-way coach and first class fares for numerous flights from its three primary hubs, the latest move by a major network carrier to scale back pricing in the face of low-cost competition. The new fares--which the airline said are "especially valuable to business travelers," those unable to book weeks in advance and those traveling on shorter itineraries--in many cases require only a seven-day advance purchase. The new fares are capacity-controlled, nonrefundable and offered in addition to traditional advance purchase fares.

The new one-way fares range from $259 in coach to $499 in business class. Impacted routes include city pairs between Continental's hubs in Cleveland, Houston and Newark, and such major business markets as Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Miami, Oakland, San Francisco and Seattle.

    Visa & Passport News

    • CIBT has learned, from a number of sources that China has lifted its temporary moratorium on issuing visas for travelers transiting through Hong Kong. In the past, many nationalities were permitted to obtain visas for mainland China while in Hong Kong.  This service was suspended earlier this year but has become available again.  If you do plan to obtain your visa in Hong Kong, please bear in mind that this service could be suspended again, at any time and without notice.  CIBT will make every effort to communicate any related news to you; however, we strongly recommend that you contact your host (or hotel) in Hong Kong to determine if it will be possible to secure your visa while in Hong Kong.

    Viking River Cruises' Europe Special

You can still visit Vienna and Nuremberg in 2004, for as little as $959pp, in an offer from Viking River Cruises. You will enjoy visits to historic towns and riverside villages as you cruise the Danube's countryside.

A river cruise with Viking River Cruises is the best way to see Europe, Russia or China up close and in depth. Explore the best destinations in the world from an intimate perspective, spending your time being there, not getting there.

Unlike a bus tour where you spend more time on the bus than actually seeing the country, Viking River Cruises offers you fine food, great service and scenic cruising along some of the world’s great rivers.

Viking River Cruises visits at least one port a day on virtually every itinerary and you can explore small villages off the beaten path that are inaccessible via an ocean cruise. Docking in the heart of town, you'll have more time to see the cities, not just travel to the cities. You'll experience ever-changing riverside scenery as well as local nightlife when your ship overnights in port.

All prices are per person, double occupancy, and include port charges of $49. Combinable with Past Passenger Discount. Limited singles are available; call for pricing. Airfare purchased from Viking River Cruises does not include air taxes/fees of $150. If air is purchased independently, transfers may be purchased when available and price will be quoted at time of booking.
