Leonard said the government and other entities--such
as suppliers and manufacturers who offer their faltering airline partners
financial relief--should step aside and let free-market competition work as it
should. He called on the government to end subsidies, lower the barriers for an
airline to exit the market and rein in taxes that are forced onto passengers.
"For now, our government is buying trouble. As
taxpayers we are subsidizing failure and we are going to see more of it," he
added, noting that AirTran has completed six profitable years. He said he would
like to "let the power of free and uncontrolled competition transform the
industry for the better."
