The carrier's percentage of seats occupied set record highs each
month in 2005, reflecting growing demand and tighter capacity industrywide.
American is trying to boost
revenue and cut costs after the company had losses of $8.12 billion in the
past five years. ``It just makes sense to take out something we are not
using and put in more seats to accommodate customers,'' Wagner said. MD-80s
make up 47% of American's
fleet. The change will increase the number of seats to 140 per plane,
including 124 in coach. American
hasn't served hot meals to coach passengers on U.S. flights since
December 2001. Most major U.S. airlines, including
American, now offer or sell
snacks and boxed meals to coach passengers on domestic flights. Removing the
galleys won't affect beverage service, the airline said.
