Airlines offer more elite status,
fewer elite perks
At the heart of many
companies' marketing efforts is the 80/20 rule, also known as
Pareto's Law, for the Italian economist who first formulated the
principle. In the world of commerce, the 80/20 rule suggests that 80
percent of a company's revenue is generated by 20% of its customers.

High Turnover at TSA
Raises Concern for Air Safety
David M. Stone, head
of the Transportation Security Administration, announced yesterday
that he will leave his post in June, sparking concern among aviation
officials and lawmakers about the future of an agency now bracing
for its fourth leadership change in three years. A TSA spokesman
said in a written statement that Stone told Homeland Security
Secretary Michael Chertoff "of his intention to step down from TSA
and has agreed to the Department's request to remain until June to
assist with the transition of a successor."

World's Biggest Airliner
Completes Maiden Flight
The world's biggest
airliner, the European Airbus A380, flew for the first time on
Wednesday in a new challenge to U.S. rival Boeing Co. in the battle
for the global aviation market. The double-decker A380, designed to
carry 555 passengers but with room for more than 800, touched down
smoothly almost four hours after soaring into sunny skies on its
maiden flight above Airbus headquarters near Toulouse in southern
France. Click Here

Airlines must report deaths of pets
U.S. airlines will be required to report to the government how many
pets are killed on flights each month starting in June, more than
eight years after a dog escaped his cage and eluded police at New
York's LaGuardia Airport. Consumers will be able to check how many
pets were killed, lost or injured in the same government report that
discloses late flights, diverted bags and traveler complaints, the
U.S. Transportation Department said Monday in the Federal Register
in Washington. The new rule grew from complaints by a customer whose
dog, Boris, escaped from an airport kennel.

Northwest,
Continental, Delta match
American Airlines increase
A fare increase launched
by American Airlines appeared to stick, as Northwest
Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and Continental Airlines
said they, too, would raise fares in most U.S.
cities. American blamed fuel prices when it
announced fare increases of $5 one-way and $10
round-trip on most domestic and U.S.-Canada flights
on Thursday. It was the latest among several fare
hikes by U.S. airlines in
recent months. Some stuck when
competitors matched them; others were abandoned.

Southwest
puts an end to frequent flier bonus
Southwest
Airlines has quietly ended one of the
industry's most generous and longest-running
frequent flier freebies - bonus credits for
online bookings.
The
Dallas-based discounter grants credits, not
miles, for each flight. Southwest started
giving bonus credits about eight years ago
to introduce travelers to Internet booking
at Southwest.com. Other airlines have
offered online incentives, but none were as
generous or long-lived.
