Air Tran CEO claims bankruptcy  used as business strategy
Air Tran CEO Joe Leonard blasted legacy carriers that are benefiting under the financial protection of bankruptcy, which he believes is used as part of their business plans. Despite their financial woes, Leonard said, these carriers are not changing their business models or coming up with a workable plan. "They can duck year of credit obligations and live to fly another day," he commented in a speech to the Aero Club of Washington. "There's no talk of making money. Administration proposes raising use of passports between u.s., neighbors
The days of passport-free travel between United States and other Western Hemisphere countries may come to an end as officials look for new ways to keep terrorists out of the United States. The federal departments of Homeland Security and State yesterday proposed new rules that by 2008 would require the use of passports for Americans traveling to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and such Caribbean countries as the British Virgin Islands, unless an alternative document can be created that meets the security parameters established in a new terrorist prevention law enacted last year. Airline travelers to top 1 billion in 2015

The number of U.S. airline passengers will grow 3.4 percent annually and top 1 billion by 2015, a slower growth rate than projected last year, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said yesterday. Capacity cuts by carriers such as American Airlines and United Airlines led to slower-than-expected increases this year, said Bob Bowles, the FAA's manager of statistics and forecasts. Northwest and KLM Modify Ticket Reissuance Policy
Northwest Airlines and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines currently require all domestic tickets to be reissued when a voluntary change is made to a reservation.  All change fees and any difference in fare must be collected at the time of reissuance or the change will not be permitted. This policy applies to tickets issued for travel in the United States, Canada and San Juan. Northwest Continues Milwaukee Buildup with New Nonstop Flights to Denver - Airline also expands service to Boston, Detroit, Kansas City and New York
Northwest Airlines is continuing its Milwaukee schedule buildup with its sixth expansion in less than two years. Two new flights will be added from Milwaukee to Denver; daily frequencies will increase on routes to Boston, Detroit, Kansas City and New York.

Northwest's new service between Milwaukee and Denver begins June 9. The flights are timed to allow for convenient one-day business trips. Customers currently holding tickets on connecting itineraries to Denver on Northwest will be able to change to Northwest's new nonstop service without paying an administrative change fee by contacting their travel agent by April 30, 2005. Northwest to Offer Nonstop Service from Indianapolis to Four New Cities
Northwest Airlines announced another expansion of its Indianapolis flight schedule with plans to provide the only nonstop service to Seattle and Austin, Texas, new nonstop service to Denver and St. Louis, and an additional frequency to Kansas City, Mo. When the six new flights start on June 9, 2005, Northwest’s Indianapolis schedule will grow to a record 52 flights a day to 21 destinations.
 

Northwest Applies for Broad Authority to Serve India
Northwest Airlines has filed a request with the U.S. Department of Transportation for broad authority to serve India. As its first priority, the airline intends to pursue service from Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport to Bangalore (via Amsterdam) beginning in October 2005, subject to foreign government approval.

Phil Haan, Northwest executive vice president of international, alliances, and information technology and chairman, NWA Cargo, said, "The global network that Northwest offers customers through its partnerships with SkyTeam member airlines would only be enhanced by additional service to India." Haan added that "Northwest looks forward to the final signing of the Open Skies Agreement between the U.S. and Indian governments." Click Here to continue.

AMERICAN AIRLINES UPDATE - INTERNATIONAL BAGGAGE ALLOWANCE CHANGE
Effective March 1, 2005, the domestic free checked baggage weight allowance of 50lbs was expanded to all American Airlines destinations, including Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Mexico, Caribbean, Central and South America, Europe and Asia. All bags weighing between 51lbs and 70lbs are subject to a $25 USD overweight fee. Click here to continue. The change in policy does not apply to customers ticketed prior to March 1, 2005.    

Delta Introduces New International Flights
Delta customers will soon have access to Moscow from Atlanta. Delta currently serves Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport daily from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and is the only U.S. carrier serving Russia. Service begins June 1.Service begins in May to Berlin’s Tegel International Airport from JFK and Chennai (Madras), India, via Paris-Charles de Gaulle. A second non-stop flight to Rome, Italy from Atlanta is also scheduled to begin in May.

Delta’s new international flights will operate using a Boeing 767 300 ER Aircraft, capable of carrying up to 204 people in a two-class configuration featuring Delta’s award winning BusinessElite® Service.

April Hotel Rates To Jump Significantly
JP Morgan Chase analysts released data predicting hotel rates in key business travel destinations to be an average of 20 percent higher this April than in April 2003. The data show projected rate increases exceeding 20 percent in Atlanta, Los Angeles and New York. New York is expected to have the highest expected monthly increase of 29 percent. Host Marriott Corp. said that it had completed the sale of about 85 percent of its interest in Courtyard, a joint venture with Marriott International Inc., for about $92 million.
